An elements X has two isotopes of 2010X and 2210X in the ratio of 1:3. What is the relative atomic mass of x?

Solution

Ratio of abundance (i.e. 20:22) %

1 + 3 = 4

Element 2010X = ¼ = 0.25

Element 2210X = ¾ = 0.75

Relative atomic mass

= (20 X 0.25) + (22 X 0.75)

= 5 + 16.5

= 21.5.
