The relative atomic mass of an element is 21.5. The two isotopes of the element are 2010X occurring 25% in nature and x10X occurring 75% in nature. Calculate X.

Solution

21.5 = (20 X 25) + [(x) X 75]

                    100                   100

21.5 = 5 + 0.75x

Collect like terms

21.5 – 5 = 0.75x

16.5 = 0.75x

Divide both sides by 0.75

16.5 = 0.75x

0.75     0.75               x = 22
